A close interpretation
of the Gaia concept would indicate the earth's ecosystem is fully
capable of self-repair and regeneration.
It has been mankind's belief the he knew better than nature what
nature's use was. Ecological efforts can become another attempt to
enforce human will on nature as if it were inert and awaiting disposal
to some man created industry.
If this thinking is indicative of an unbalance in mankind itself, the
most ecological act is the healing of humans.
It seems a case in point to note that, according to the Washington
Post, the West Nile Virus has spread at least 200 miles in the past
week to the Richmond, Virginia, area. And plans proceed to spray the
Washington, DC, area with pesticides to suppress the mosquito larva,
as has been done elsewhere on the Eastern Seaboard.
Experts generally agree that the West Nile Virus is most potentially
dangerous to individuals with compromised immune systems. Many experts
also agree that pesticide exposure compromises immune systems - and
not only in the human population. A Google(tm) web search on the
string "pesticides and the human immune system" yields
13,800 pages sighting this fact.
At best, such plans seem exceptionally short-sighted.
The rapid spread of this virus suggests the issue of general pesticide
spraying for mosquito control will, in a matter of time, be before us
in the Monroe County, Indiana, community.
